Based on the real story of Marina Jose and 45 other Indian nurses who were stranded in their hospital in Tikrit Iraq during the civil war between ISIS and the Iraqi army, Take Off is a movie that captures the horrors, desperation, and heroism during those 23 dreadful days. This Malayalam movie starring Parvathy, Fahadh Faasil, and Kunchacko Boban, has Parvathy playing Sameera, based on Marina Jose. Marina played a crucial role in getting an SOS message across to those in charge and maintaining communication with the rescue team. Her story is one of bravery and facing fear head-on.
Manjhi — The Mountain Man
This inspiring Hindi movie is based on the life of Dashrat Manjhi, who came to be known as the ‘mountain man’ for breaking a mountain to ease access for a village to the closest hospital. Manji, from Gahlaur village in Bihar, takes on this monumental task after his wife, Falguni, slips and falls down the mountain while taking food for him. Due to the distance of the hospital, he couldn’t save his wife in time, and thus starts his mission of breaking down the mountain. The movie stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and is a story of grit and determination.
This true story of a single mother who becomes a legal assistant responsible for taking down a California power company in a multi-million dollar lawsuit for polluting a city’s water supply. Erin, played by Julia Roberts, is an unemployed, divorced, single mother who becomes an activist after she notices everyone in the small community of Hinkley suffering from one or the other ailment. Erin, relentless and headstrong, became a household name following this lawsuit.
Neerja Bhanot posthumously became the youngest recipient of India’s highest peacetime gallantry, the Ashoka Chakra Award for saving the passengers of Pan Am Flight 73 which was hijacked by terrorists in Karachi Pakistan in 1986. Neerja was the senior flight purser of the flight and showed immense courage. She put the passengers’ lives before her own and was responsible for saving several lives. Sonam Kapoor plays the role of Neerja in this Hindi film that is sure to leave you in tears and in awe of this selfless and brave young woman.
