The world understands intellectual acuity in one way. There is tremendous disparity amongst those that are able and those that intellectually, aren’t.

In spite of the hardships, struggles, and lack of financial support, there are compassionate people across the country who have dedicated their lives to helping intellectually challenged individuals.

Here we talk about four NGOs in India that have been supporting intellectually challenged people and giving them hope to lead better and stronger lives:

Amma Nanna Anada Ashram, Choutuppal, Nalgonda, Telangana

Shankar founded Amma Nanna Anada Ashram in 2010 to support homeless and underprivileged intellectually challenged individuals. The objective of the Ashram is to foster a psychologically and physically sound nation where intellectually challenged people have access to bare necessities in the form of food, medicines, and nurturing facilities to enable them to lead dignified lives — which to date has crossed the 400 mark. In the wake of the pandemic, the Ashram has been taking care of its community of intellectually challenged people in spite of close to 80 of them testing positive for COVID-19.

Adhar, Maharashtra

Created by a group of parents of intellectually challenged children in 1990, NGOs like Adhar work hard to create a safe haven for intellectually challenged individuals. Volunteers and staff at Adhar work relentlessly to provide love, care, and daily necessities to differently-abled people who are otherwise mocked by society. Adhar aims to educate society on the importance of providing support to such people and breaking down the taboos and stigma associated with mental health. Today, Adhar is located in Badlapur and Nasik and is also involved with building an old-age home to shelter aging parents of intellectually challenged individuals. Home to 355+ special adults, Adhar has created a wonderful community of psychiatrists, occupational therapists, psychologists, teachers and caretakers.

Karunya Medical and Vocational Rehabilitation Center, Palakkad

Established in Palakkad, KMVRC houses 1500+ differently-abled children, specifically those suffering from intellectual disabilities. The objective of this NGO is to empower, support, guide, and help such children grow in a quest to help them to become self-sufficient. Here, the children are challenged with various conditions, including cerebral palsy and autism. However, the centre uses special teaching aids and educators to help them become the best versions of themselves.

Pallavi Ashram, Telangana

Founded by Sridevi in 2005, Pallavi Ashram provides a safe space for women suffering from mental disabilities. As a counselor herself, Sridevi has been well aware of the hardships women go through in terms of physical and mental abuse and has dedicated her life to helping women find a ray of light in their downtrodden worlds. She started off by selling her own land to take premises on rent to provide shelter to intellectually challenged women, rescue them from abandoned families and help them overcome psychological trauma. She provides them with meals, medication, and education.
