TV shows from the beginning have mostly been centered on heteronormative characters with the lesser representation of the LGBTQIA+ community. Now that the representation of the community is at an all-time high there are many shows with strong characters that people from the LGBTQIA+ community can relate to. The shows not only present the community in a positive light but also erase the stigma to show that their sexual orientation and gender identity are just as valid as anyone else’s. Here are 5 shows that are a must-watch for everyone:
1. The L Word: Generation Q
The show which premiered in 2019 is a sequel to the series “The L Word” which aired from 2004 to 2009. The show follows the lives of a group of LGBTQIA+ friends who live in Los Angeles, California. The theme is about how the characters experience love, heartbreaks, setbacks, and personal growth in the city. The show continues to maintain the juicy plot lines of the original but with a more modern twist that appeals to today’s audience.
2. RuPaul’s Drag Race
For those who love drama or reality shows, RuPaul’s Drag Race is sure to be a favorite as it is a reality competition to be America’s Next Drag Superstar. The reality competition was instrumental in bringing the art form of drag to the mainstream and opened the platform to all the queer artists from across the country. It has greatly increased the visibility of the LGBTQIA+ community and highlighted a number of issues faced by them including discrimination, marriage equality, and HIV. The series is packed with plenty of art and drama that people love.
3. Euphoria
An American teen drama series, Euphoria is about teenagers growing up in modern-day California. The series is not for the faint of heart as it follows a group of high school students and their experience with friendship, love, drug use, sexual identity and trauma. Its broad narrative involves plenty of plotlines related to the LGBTQ and the journey of youngsters in their sexual self-discovery.
4. Queer Eye
Another reality series that reboots an old favorite ‘Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’, the Queer Eye follows a new Fab Five: Tan France, fashion expert; Antoni Porowski, food and wine expert;
Karamo Brown, culture expert; Jonathan Van Ness, grooming expert and Bobby Berk, design expert. The award-winning show with its feel-good vibes is popular for a strong representation of the LGBT community and other marginalized communities including people of colour. The series has deep insights into all things modern with a realistic representation of the people involved.
5. Four More Shots, Please
This fun and high-drama Indian series is based on four Millennial women (two in their early 20’s and two in their 30’s) who live in Mumbai. The plot is about their independent lives, love, friendships and mistakes that touch upon a number of social issues such as homosexuality, single motherhood and body shaming. It also gives a realistic view of someone going against societal norms to embrace their sexuality.
