Cyclone Gaja | 3.7 lakh homeless | 3.4 lakh houses destroyed | 63 dead

It is easy to dismiss the statistics. We hear of it every time there is a disaster but can you imagine what it must feel like to be in the thick of things? To have your house shattered, to lose your belongings, to be without food and electricity for days. This is the reality for most people on the ground right now and yet again, it is the farming community that is taking the hit.

According to estimates, around 60% to 80% of the coconut trees have fallen in the delta districts. T.N contributes a quarter of the country’s coconuts, it will now take years to revive these plantations.

Most of the affected areas remain without electricity and essential food items. After the horrific experience of the cyclone, people now have to deal with the aftermath. It’s going to be a long and arduous road to recovery.

Many organizations and individuals reached out to Donatekart after the cyclone. We set up campaigns to provide various relief materials. Within no time, generous contributions started pouring in from all over the globe.

Solar lamps were given to people as a part of the relief drive. To our surprise, these lamps are really helping people cope in these difficult times. The absence of electricity and light was getting quite depressing, and these lamps have brought some much needed brightness to this community.

Plenty of other relief material such as groceries and food packets have been delivered in collaboration with Rapid Response and New Opportunities, NOCPL.

A lot of work still remains to be done. Many families still need to be reached, families consisting of old people and little children. Please consider donating a few essentials that’ll help them survive this difficult ordeal. Log on to Donatekart and donate now.
