Covid-19 Has Worsened Hunger In India — Here’s How You Can Help
The number of people today who are starved for a square meal is rising rapidly and has only worsened due to the Covid pandemic that continues to rage on.
In India, the number of children who qualify as underweight has risen sharply. Rural and urban unemployment has shot up to 15%, causing families to be pushed to the brink of starvation. Covid deaths aside, people are dying more from starvation and suicide at the prospect of not being able to look after their families or themselves.
The pandemic has scarred each one of us in some way. We are all battling a loss of some kind. However, many of us continue to have our basic necessities in place, something that remains only a distant dream for thousands of families.
The question is, what can we do? Here are some ways we can be more conscientious and do our bit:
- Avoid wasting: Many of us continue to have leftovers that we end up discarding. If we can plan our consumption more intelligently, it will lead to less food wastage, leaving more food for those in dire need of it. This will also make us more sensitive to the needs of those who do not have the means to fulfill them, leave alone having extras.
- Share food: There are many people who don’t have access to food due to reasons like age, illness, or poverty. Find ways to reach out and help at least one family in need, or maybe even one person if that is more feasible. Your help does not have to be only intended for humans. Reaching out to starving and sick animals is also a service.
- Support: The need of the hour is a collective responsibility. Join support groups or start some. Connect with people who can and want to contribute so that more people can be given the aid they need. The smallest of chains can add to changing the condition of many homes and families. We do not need large movements and huge reserves. Little acts of kindness will create ripples that can help turn the tides.
- Donate: While we may all have constraints of time, connections, and abilities, we can still do our bit with the smallest of surplus funds. Donating on crowdfunding platforms can go a long way in helping someone. Donatekart allows you to donate to multiple NGOs that are working tirelessly to end hunger in the country. Your donations can help provide meals, grocery kits, and supplies directly to the affected families through the NGOs.
Clearly, we haven’t seen the end of Covid or reached a place where all can get through the pandemic without support from fellow human beings. With a coming together of hearts and minds, we can strive for better times where every human sleeps with their hearts and stomachs filled with food and love.
