Here’s Why Conserving Wildlife Is Now More Important Than Ever
We humans rely heavily on nature for our daily survival and sustenance. However, malpractices on our part have led to the immense deterioration of the environment, regardless of whether it is birds and animals in the wildlife or plants. In light of this, the need for conserving wildlife and forests is upon us more than ever before!
What is considered wildlife?
Wildlife includes every form of living being that exists in the wild. This includes plants, birds, and animals, such as insects, amphibians, bugs, reptiles, algae and fungi. While wildlife earlier used to attribute only to animal species living in the uncivilised forests, now it includes all such categories under the umbrella term of wildlife.
Why has the conservation of forest and wildlife become so important?
The need for wildlife protection and the conservation of plants and animals has become more apparent than ever, with the huge numbers of species becoming extinct due to harmful human activities, like poaching and killing. Over the last 40–50 years, approximately 10,000 species have gone extinct every year, with many species coming dangerously close to going extinct as well. This can be greatly attributed to illegal poaching activities for ornamental purposes, such as the tusk of elephants and the horns of rhinos.
However, in recent years, the immense threats to wildlife associated with climate change have also pushed the matter into becoming one that needs our urgent attention. Due to frequent natural events, such as droughts, floods, and deforestation, many animals, plants, and birds lose their lives or lose their food source, making it urgent to take steps to save wildlife, including plant and bird saving.
Similarly, other unnatural disasters, such as forest fires, have also inflicted great damage on the number of species that are lost every year. For instance, the recent Australian wildfires have been declared among the “worst wildlife disasters in modern history”, burning millions of flora and charring millions of species of fauna. Apart from this, overpopulation has become another major reason for the same, especially since more people means the need for more space for them to live.
How to work towards wildlife preservation?
Due to this, the need to understand the immense importance of wildlife conservation and take active steps to ensure they are protected is immense. And to achieve the same, awareness is one of the most crucial requirements. It is crucial to educate people about plant and animal conservation and how their small actions can lead to a ripple effect that can harm the wildlife immensely in the long run. Since the population has increased exponentially from what it was 40–50 years ago, and it is expected to grow even more, awareness in other aspects of daily living is crucial. For this purpose, governments in all countries need to establish strict laws regarding managing habitat, protecting endangered species, establishing protecting areas and much more is crucial. And only when the people of the land diligently follow them can the ideal way of wildlife conservation be achieved.
