How Dr. Abhijit Sonawane’s Selfless Efforts Have Impacted Thousands In Pune
It was 1999 and I had just started practicing in Pune. But instead of being happy with what I was doing, I was constantly comparing myself to other doctors. I just wanted to be able to open my own clinic one day.
I remember asking an old man who used to beg on the streets of the villages I used to visit — Baba, when will I get rich? Money is all that I craved for at that point in time.
An old beggar on the road once heard me complain and told me that becoming rich is easy. But money can’t make you a good human being. His words stayed with me and have been inspiring me ever since.
As time passed by, I got multiple jobs that paid me very well — some even around 5 lakhs per month. But I wasn’t happy, I wanted to give back to society. And thus began Doctor For Beggars.
I left my job and with my wife, Manisha, by my side, started helping the poor and underprivileged on the streets of Pune.
We visit different places of worship every day of the week and give the required treatment to elderly beggars. Those who are serious, I get them admitted to hospitals and pay for their bills.
I also try to help them set up small shops so that they don’t have to return to begging again.
This has been my life for the last 6 years. We were able to help over 49 beggars and 1100 homeless individuals. I am grateful for the life I have and the opportunity to serve the people in need.
