How To Prepare For The Third Wave Of The Pandemic

It’s not easy. Just when everything seems to be going back to normal with the number of cases decreasing and the lockdowns being eased — there are discussions about the impending third wave. It feels like a never-ending battle. Scientists and doctors are already expecting the third wave to be more severe than the second, with children being affected the most.

The reason for multiple waves? Mutations in the genetic code of the coronavirus. These mutants can spread faster than the original coronavirus. And hence it’s important for us to be prepared for what we could face in the next few months. The need of the hour is to prepare for this third wave.

While the second wave might not be over yet, it’s never too early to start preparing for the third wave. Here are 5 things you can do to stay safe and keep others safe:

1. Get the vaccine: this is the first step to fighting the virus. This not only keeps you safe, but also those around you. You can get the vaccine by booking an appointment on CoWin or the Arogya Setu app. Here’s an easy guide of things to do before, during and after getting the vaccine.

2. Continue to follow safety precautions: with lockdowns and curfews easing up, and cities slowly opening up, it can feel like the dust has finally settled. But it’s not over yet. We need to continue following all safety precautions, even after getting the vaccine.

3. Educate your children: they’re the most vulnerable right now. With vaccines being open for 18+ for the time being, children need to be more careful. Tell them about the importance of wearing a mask, washing their hands, using sanitizer, and maintaining social distance.

4. Monitor your child’s symptoms: if your child does fall sick, keep a close eye on his/her symptoms and seek medical attention if they get worse.

5. Donate to Covid relief fundraisers to help strengthen the health infrastructure of our country: there are several NGOs/individuals dedicated to helping people and hospitals get access to oxygen supplies and medical equipment. By contributing, you will be providing support to our healthcare system.
