My mother was admitted to the Central India Institute of Medical Science (CIIMS) and that’s when I realised how difficult it is for the families of the patients who were poor to get proper food.

I shared this with my mother who even in her pain, asked me to take up the cause of the needy.

Unfortunately, she didn’t return from the hospital but I was left with this desire to do something for the needy.

We set up a separate kitchen to prepare meals every Sunday to be distributed at the CIIMS. This is how Seva Kitchen started.

Seva Kitchen also runs Neki Ka Pitara, which when translated, means ‘The fridge of kindness.’ Under this initiative, a refrigerator at hospitals is well-stocked with milk, juices etc so that the poor have access to nutritious food. The stock is replenished every week.

There are 21 Seva Kitchens in India which are spread across Nagpur, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Moradabad, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Haryana and Delhi. Over 3,000 fresh free hot meals are served every Sunday to families in the hospitals.

With constant support from people, we have also been able to help thousands of people during the pandemic, giving them grocery kits etc.

Our social media groups are very active and that is how we have been able to reach out to people in need.

To all those who want to do something for the society, my only advice would be not to be afraid of the financial constraints. It’s the will that is most important.
