Roxanne’s Efforts To Create A Paradise For Animals Has Saved Many Innocent Lives
I was only a little girl when I saw my father rescuing street dogs. He would bring them back home and care for them. At one point we had about 50 dogs that we would look after.
My parents would often say that I would end up around animals, having grown up with so many. We had many different kinds too — even hyenas! But soon my parents moved out to Karjat, Maharashtra and I was sent off to boarding school.
I then went on to work in sales and the airline industry. But I always knew that my calling was to help animals. So I finally quit my job to open the Terra Anima Trust in Ooty, Tamil Nadu in 2000.
I ran the animal shelter for 7 years and was even appointed as the honorary animal welfare inspector for the Nilgiris by the government. I was in my 50s but I conducted rescue operations and did everything I could to protect these animals.
Unfortunately, I had to close down the shelter due to lack of funds.
But I didn’t give up. I later moved back to Karjat and started Probably Paradise on Christmas eve in 2011 — a home for abandoned, chronically ill, injured, and old animals.
Today, along with my small team of 14, we look after 230 dogs, 160 cats, 2 horses, 8 ponies, 7 donkeys, a cow, and a pig.
Animals love unconditionally. They’re God’s gift. They’re there for you without judgment and are pure at heart. Humans love with so many preconditions. And yet, animals are treated with so much cruelty.
Probably Paradise is a place where these animals can live and die with dignity. It’s where they can find the love and care they deserve. And I want to leave no stone unturned in giving them the best life.
