Stray animals hit hard across the Nation by Corona virus lockdown

Corona virus has struck the voiceless species with endless woes. With the feeders restricted to their homes under Lockdown, the four-legged creatures are left to fend for themselves. But then again, they are utterly helpless since the eateries, road-side food vendors, most of the kirana stores and even leftovers from homes are unavailable these days.

“Close to 30 stray dogs in the city have already died owing to starvation,” revealed an article by Pune Mirror on Friday, April 24.

They cannot speak to you but in their innocent eyes you can see abundant hunger. However, the fear of being contaminated by them keeps even the kind hearts away. The World Health Organisation has for a number of times clarified that animals cannot spread or even get Corona. However, hordes of false claims and messages asking people to stay away from animals are still being spread via various social media channels. As a result, NGOs are receiving frequent calls from pet parents who wish to abandon their pets.

Strange, isn’t it? Only days ago, it was amidst the broad daylight that the inhabitants of Mumbai’s Khareghat Parsi Colony received the most pleasant surprise. A flock of peacocks had ambled into the streets from a nearby forest. A delight it was to the eyes of Mumbaikars locked in their respective homes.

A little too often we are being gladdened by the news of animals thronging the streets of the country and roaming about freely. It is being said that they have reclaimed their territory while the supposed superior species is confined to their abodes.

However, what’s good in coming back to your lost home when it has nothing to give back to you?

Their homes are devoid of food, water and secure shelters. Unfortunately, even their truest friends, the feeders. To add to their woes, a cap on petrol sale has further restrained the feeders and social workers from reaching out to these strays. “Problems are being faced by pet parents and animal caretakers as there are a plethora of restrictions being imposed due to lockdown. Also, there are no ambulances available. Hence, going to their rescue when in need is even more difficult at present.” A volunteer from Pune expressed her concern.

As per Livestock Census-2012, there are about 5.28 Million cattle and 17.13 Million Stray Dogs across cities in India. The numbers have further increased and now over 30 Million dogs are believed to be suffering nationwide. The situation is getting worse with every passing day. Rumors that link stray animals with COVID-19 have started doing the rounds of late. This has only aggravated the circumstances for these helpless souls.

Responding to this intensifying situation, WHO has again come out in support of the voiceless species. They have announced that no animals are involved in the current episode of Corona virus. The same has been confirmed by Mongabay-India.

Animal rights activist, Raina Kapoor from Delhi was reported as saying, “The strays and birds are starving. In this scenario, they will die very soon.”

Government advisories and statements have finally eased the restrictions on Animal Care Organisations and Individuals to some extent. That has helped Donatekart partner with NGOs across cities and reach out to the animals in dire need. The generosity and kind contributions of our donors have enabled us to fill the hungry stomachs of over 12,000 animals in various cities of India.

While some NGO partners have taken initiatives to build cageless homes for the selfless creatures, others have come forward to provide them with nutritious wet and dry food everyday. We are delivering them the necessary animal food donated by you. Believe it or not, a mere donation of about 380 bucks can feed these stray animals for up to 5 days. There are still thousands of them starving out there, wandering around on the streets in scorching summer. Most of them do not even have access to water, let alone food.

Join Donatekart (here), in our battle of creating a healthier and happier world for every soul under the sun. Our NGO partners work across India in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Punjab, Haryana, Noida. You can save a pure and innocent animal from prolonged starvation.

Together we can make a difference. For them.
