Most people think that to be successful, you need money. But really, to be successful, you need a heart of gold — compassion, empathy, and the determination to give back and help others, irrespective of what you may have.

People are faced with challenges on a regular basis, and some people convert those challenges into opportunities that help others live better lives. In spite of the hardships and struggles some people undergo, they leave no stone unturned to support others. We are proud to present three stories of inspiration and kindness from the hinterlands of India:

Baskar — ‘Furrying’ his Auto

Baskar has spent the last few years driving an auto and being an on-call driver, and his story of kindness took shape the day he met two animal care volunteers, Vinodhini and Manjula, who needed Baskar’s services to drive to various parts of the city, to feed stray dogs. Inspired, Baskar himself began setting aside portions of his income to purchase meat and rice to feed dogs. One day, Baskar received an upsetting call from Vinodhini regarding the need for a driver service to transport an injured and bleeding dog from the side of the road to the nearest vet clinic. He rushed his auto to the injured animal, and the two managed to save its life by making it reach a vet on time. Soon after, Baskar began receiving more calls from animal rescue volunteers to help ferry injured animals to clinics. However, Baskar’s auto wasn’t owned by him, and his owner wasn’t too pleased about using the auto as transport to ferry injured stray animals.

This didn’t deter Baskar as he saved up to purchase his own auto and started his movement ‘Help Voiceless.’ As word spread, volunteers and NGOs from across the city sought Baskar’s help in transporting injured animals. To date, Baskar has helped 200+ animals receive medical attention.

Dipika Minz’s Classes in Khunti — Education for All

The COVID-19 pandemic has been extremely tough, especially on children in rural areas. Due to the shutdown of schools, these kids don’t have any access to learning and education, thereby widening the disparity when compared with kids in urban areas who have access to technology to continue with distance learning. With an aim to bridge this gap, 11-year-old Dipika Minz from Khunti, Jharkhand, has stepped up to the plate and decided to impart education to these rural children. A teacher to 20+ students, Dipika has brought a ray of hope to these kids in this time of crisis.

Anuradha Bhonsale — Mother to Many

Forced into child labor at a young age, Anuradha’s first found her guardian angel as a young girl when she asked one of her employers to sponsor her education and send her to school. She worked hard at school and realized how empowering education could be through the hardships and financial struggles. Inspired by her own story, she rescues destitute children today and helps them realize their dreams by sending them to schools to study. Her efforts have helped her rescue over 900+ kids in the last 24 years. She has been working relentlessly to free kids from bonded labor through Avani, an NGO.
